K&K Monarchy

After Austria had usurped parts of southern Poland, Krakow gradually gains economical and culturall power. In 1848 a national upheavel is stifled by the Austrian army. After that, Krakow nonetheless has a lot more autonomy and freedom than before. The times of enlightenment finally make their way to the Austrian Kaiser Franz Joseph. Still today, so they say, the people of Krakow do not reject the western, Austrian way of life. Third to Vienna and Budapest Krakow becomes one of the largest cities of the Habsburg Reich, that is also named "K&K-Monarchie", which is an a abreviation for "Kaiserlich-Königliche Monarchie" which translated might mean "Royal Empirial monarchy". When a fire distructs the Rynek Glowny the surrounding town houses are rebuilt in the style of classisism.

At the end of the 19th century Krakow is a center of Polish natinalism. There is a "bohemian uprising". The "Young Poland" criticises the bourgois "pride and prejudice". Students, intellectual, artists gather in Café Michalik in Florianska (that still exists today).

With the industrialisation of Poland the population of Krakow grows from 10 000 in the year 1870 to 80 000 in 1900. The workers have poor working conditions and few rights. In 1905 30 000 people demonstrate for more political rights. In 1912 Lenin works as a foreig reporter for the "Prawda", a Russian newspaper that criticizes government. In 1914 the >>> First World War begins.
