Ryanair offers cheap flights from London Stanstead to Friedrichshafen, some 90 miles north of Arosa

Information on attending the snowboard world championship in Arosa, January 2007

How to fly and rail from London to Arosa with Ryanair and SBB (Swiss railways)

Snowboard world championship will be held from January 13th to 20th in Arosa Switzerland.

Friedrichshafen is a rather unknown town - famous though as the birth place of the "Zeppelin" - on the German side of Lake Constance.

From Lake Constance - renowned for the beauty of its landscapes - it is an easy train ride south through northeastern Switzerland to Arosa.

Flights from London Stanstead were available for less than 3 pounds in the beginning of December 2006.

In Friedrichshafen, you are able to buy a regional train ticket that covers almost the complete transfer by train to Arosa. This ticket is named "Tageskarte Euregio Bodensee" and costs 27 Euro (actually meant for day trips in the region of Lake Constance and the southern Swiss side of the lake, mainly famous "Appenzell" - so this ticket is valid for one day of train rides in north eastern Switzerland - which might be a reason in itself to catch up a flight with Ryanair to "Zeppelin city" Friedrichshafen). Of course, you are free to use a regular train ticket which is more expensive. "Anyway", the One Day Ticket is valid only for the train ride to Bad Ragaz some 10 miled north of Chur. From Chur, the Ratian train company offers panoramic train trips up to Arosa which is about another 10 miles east of Chur up the mountains.

For sure, rental cars are available at Friedichshafen airport. Traveling by car along the northern shore of Lake Constance to the Austrian town of Bregenz, in the outmost east of the lakeshore, then down south on Swiss autobahn to Chur might take you about 2!/2 hours. From Chur it is about 10 miles uphill to Arosa which actually shares the same mountain range with the admittingly even more famous resort of Davos: Arosa is on the western slopes, Davos is on the eastern side.

Friedrichshafen is covered by the online edition of the US-American travel guide Frommer's .

Ryanair also flys to the German city of Karlsruhe which is north east of the Black Forest.
There are newly installed panoramic trains on a historical route (Black forest rails were laid in the middle fo the 19th century) way down south to Constance on Lake Constance. From the lakeside town of Constance, you may get a "One day Euregio ticket", see above, that will be vaild for a train ride almost up to the Swiss town of Chur, at the foot of the Arosa mountains.

For a map on this situation see the online edition of the US-American travel guide

Fodor's which covers the Black Forest. The map shows Constance in the southeast corner. Constance spelled Konstanz in German is the biggest town on Lake Constance bordering Switzerland and the Swiss lakeside town of Kreuzlingen. From there is is a one hour autobahn ride zu Zurich in the south.

Seems like an interesting place to stay in Friedrichshafen - and to eat out:

Hacienda
featured on the city's tourism office's pages: "A small, affectionately-run hotel in the outskirts of Friedrichshafen --- large Italian style breakfast buffet as well as an interesting Mediterranean cuisine --- 3 - 5 minutes to the city centre, direct connection to the airport as well as to the fair ground." 1,5 km to the shores of Lake Constance. Rates start as low as 65 Euro for a double room with bath including breakfast. Beware: there are only 13 beds available at this small hotel.
