Tiergarten - the park and its surroundings

Tiergarten is for Berlin what Central Park is for New York City...

Located in the city district of Tiergarten, named after the park, it covers several hundred acres. As it extends from the train station "Zoologischer Garten" -"Bahnhof Zoo"- in the West to Brandenburger Tor in the East.

This large and elongated park is cut in half along its East-West axis by the street, "Straße des 17. Juni." It was here on this 60-meter wide boulevard where this year's Love Parade took place in July. Over 500,000 people came to attend, flooding the park almost beyond capacity - a techno-Woodstock !

Located directly in the middle of a roundabout in the center of the park is the 75-meter high Siegessäule (Victory column), whose golden statue appeared in the Wim Wenders' film "Der Himmel über Berlin."

From here, it's a 10-minutes-walk to the "Schwangere Auster" (liter. Pregnant Oyster) otherwise officially called "Haus der Kulturen der Welt" (House for the Cultures of the World).

On the banks of the nearby Landwehr Canal is the Bauhaus Archives, whose alternating art and design exhibitions always makes any visit an interesting one.

On the southern border of the park is the Neue Nationalgalerie (National Art Gallery) designed by Mies van der Rohe. Next-door, you'll find the "Philharmonie" (Concert Hall), home to the world-renowned Berliner Philharmoniker, and the Staatsbibliothek (National Public Library). The interior as well as the exterior of these two buildings, both designed by Hans Scharoun, are worth seeing.

Before the Berlin Wall was erected, turning the area into a no-man's-land zone, Potsdamer Platz was the busiest intersection in Berlin. After the wall came down the area south of Brandenburger Tor became Europe's largest building site. Within a few years Sony, Daimler Benz and other investors built a whole new city quarter "from the scratch". Offices, apartments, shopping malls and cinemas are now waiting for thousands of people to populate the new streets and alleys.

Further attraction in Tiergarten include the Berlin Zoo ("Tiergarten") and the Flea Market on Strasse des 17. Juni (weekends).
