Kreuzberg SO 36 - around Oranienstraße

Kreuzberg was one of the most explosive parts of Germany: the occupation of buildings by squatters and the violent protests of the 1980s is still vivid in the minds of many Germans. At that time, those who were against the system, or those who found suburbia too conservative and boring, or those who simply wanted to drop out moved to Kreuzberg. Native Berliners seem to be in the minority here; while punks, rebels, anarchists, but also artists, musicians, avantgarde goldsmiths and film makers make up the main core of the inhabitants.

Peacefully, they co-exist with the Turkish population that, today, makes up about a third of residents in Kreuzberg. Many of these Turks are of the second generation and operate their own shops and businesses; they are no longer the 'immigrant workers' their parents once were. It is no surprise that SO36 is known as 'Little Istanbul.'

But what was legendary about Kreuzberg, what it is most famous for, is its nightlife. In spite of the fact that the scene shifted over to East Berlin (to Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg) after the fall of the Wall, the streets of SO36 at midnight are anything but dead.
